TRL board to be known soon

The Tanzania Railways Limited (TRL) board is expected to be known immediately after the appointment of the board chairman, Transport minister Harrison Mwakyembe has said.

He told The Citizen that he had appointed the board members and what remained was President Jakaya Kikwete to choose the chair.

Complaints have been flying about TRL’s poor performance partly because it has no board. The Tanzania Railways Workers Union (Trawu) has been complaining that the company has a host of problems and has been operating without a board.

Trawu secretary general Erasto Kihwele told a press conference on October 27 in Dar es Salaam that such problems included the nonpayment of workers’ outstanding dues.

He also called on the government to find immediate solutions to the problems or else the company would be plunged into an industrial action.

Dr Mwakyembe said measures had been taken to regain TRL’s lost glory. “The new managing director has been recruited and the workers council has been inaugurated. What remains is the board, which will be known soon.”He said the formation of the board was delayed to ensure that the one purposely inted complied with company’s plans of transforming the railway transport.
