Stay away from politics, Makinde tells Oyo monarchs

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has warned traditional rulers in the state against partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying those who openly participate in political activities should be prepared to be treated as politicians. Makinde gave the warning on Saturday while speaking at the newly commissioned palace of the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola, during the monarch’s first coronation anniversary and the conferment of the honorary chieftaincy title of Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland. The governor urged traditional rulers to remain neutral and concentrate on their traditional responsibilities, particularly the preservation of peace, unity and development in their domains. He said, “The traditional institution occupies a sensitive position in society and should not be dragged into partisan political contests.

“Monarchs are expected to serve as fathers to all political actors and residents in their domains, irrespective of their political affiliations. Any traditional ruler who chooses to openly participate in partisan politics should be prepared to be regarded as a politician rather than being treated solely as a traditional ruler. “If you want to play politics, then you should be ready to be treated as a politician. But if you want to remain a traditional ruler, then stay away from politics,” the governor warned. Related News Of the apparatchiks in campaign councils

Makinde maintained that his administration had continued to respect the traditional institution and would sustain its support for monarchs across the state.

He stressed that such support should not be interpreted as an invitation for traditional rulers to become partisan actors in the political process. Makinde also called on traditional rulers to continue to promote peaceful coexistence and support initiatives capable of improving the welfare of their subjects. “The traditional institution remains an important pillar of governance, especially at the grassroots, and should therefore be protected from unnecessary political divisions,” he said. The governor also stressed the need for issues-based campaigns devoid of character assassination and political blackmail, while urging candidates to carefully sell their programmes and agenda to the people. Dignitaries in attendance included traditional rulers, political leaders, government officials and other notable Nigerians who gathered to mark the Eleruwa’s first coronation on the throne.
