UP Youth Secretariat Wants MCSS Superintendent Urgently Dismissed; Calls On Pres. Boakai To Reinstate James Momoh To End Crisis
The National Youth Secretariat of the Unity Party (UP) has called for the immediate dismissal of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) Superintendent, Dr. Augurie E. Stevens, and the reinstatement of former Superintendent James A.S. Momoh in order to restore stability at the entity.
The UP Youth Secretariat expressed deep concerns about the prolonged closure of schools within the MCSS, which they say has resulted in the suffering of thousands of students. They called on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. to take immediate and decisive action to resolve the impasse.
In a release issued over the weekend, the Secretary General of the UP Youth Congress, Ambassador Evans Boima Tuku, said, “Our students have been out of the classroom for nearly a month. The future of our nation is being jeopardized by administrative dysfunction. The MCSS Teachers Association has made its position unequivocally clear: they do not want the current Superintendent, Dr. Augurie E. Stevens, and will not return to the classroom until she is dismissed.”
The UP Youth Secretariat called on President Boakai to dismiss Dr. Stevens with immediate effect, observing that the continued stay of the Superintendent in office is a direct obstacle to the resumption of academic activities. “Our students cannot be held hostage to a leadership impasse that the teachers have rejected,” Ambassador Tuku noted.
The secretariat also called on the President to reappoint James A.S. Momoh as Superintendent of MCSS, noting that Momoh is a man with the requisite educational understanding and experience to steer the system back to stability. “His previous tenure demonstrated a commitment to infrastructure and teacher development that is needed now more than ever,” Ambassador Tuku added.
The UP Youth Secretariat further called on the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) to formally issue a clearance for Momoh. “We note with concern that, while other officials cleared by the LACC have been reinstated, Mr. Momoh’s restoration has been delayed. Consistency, we demand that he be given a clean bill of health to serve without the cloud of past allegations, ensuring he can focus on the urgent task of reforming MCSS.
Ambassador Tuku emphasized that the education of Liberian children is not a political bargaining chip; rather, it is the foundation of Liberia’s future. “The Unity Party Youth wing stands with the students and the teachers in demanding a return to normalcy through competent and acceptable leadership. We urge the President to act swiftly to save the academic year,” the release maintained.
