Zimbabwe Unrolls Ambitious VAR Project

Sports Correspondent|Zimbabwe has taken a significant step towards introducing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, with the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) hosting a project kick-off meeting involving FIFA experts and key football stakeholders in Harare this week.

The initiative is being supported financially by Sakunda Holdings and is aimed at laying the groundwork for the adoption of VAR in Zimbabwean football.

The technology is expected to strengthen match officiating by providing referees with additional support when making crucial decisions during games, particularly in incidents involving goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity.

The meeting brought together FIFA technical experts and local football stakeholders to discuss the implementation of the project and the requirements needed to establish VAR in Zimbabwe.

ZIFA said the initiative represents an important step towards improving officiating standards and safeguarding the integrity of the game.

The association is also expected to work with referees and other football stakeholders as the project progresses towards eventual implementation.

The development comes as Zimbabwe seeks to modernise its football administration and match-officiating systems in line with international standards.
