Army says hackers attempted breaching official X account

By Kingsley Omonobi

The Nigerian Army said on Saturday it has detected and is actively responding to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Col Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, in a statement said, “The incident, which occurred at about 1700 hours (5pm) on Saturday, 29 August 2026, is being treated as a cybersecurity breach.

The Army said, “Immediate technical and protective measures are being activated to secure the account, prevent further unauthorised access and safeguard the integrity of information disseminated through the platform.

“The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control.

“In the interim, the public is advised to exercise caution and disregard any suspicious, unauthorised, misleading or unverified content emanating from the affected account, as such content does not represent the official position of the Nigerian Army.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to information integrity, operational security and responsible strategic communication.

“Members of the public and the media are therefore encouraged to verify information through the Nigerian Army’s other official communication platforms pending the full resolution of the incident.

“The Nigerian Army appreciates the vigilance, understanding and cooperation of the public and will provide further updates as necessary.”
