This comes after the party’s approval of the measure during last week’s parliamentary vote, as part of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa acknowledged the tough decision, recognizing the significant impact it will have on South Africans. He emphasized that, despite being part of the GNU, the IFP maintains its independence on key issues. Although the party initially opposed a 2% VAT hike, they now back the revised increase as a necessary step for economic stability.

Hlabisa argued that the VAT increase is essential to address the government’s dire financial situation and secure funding for vital social programs. Yet, he stressed that this measure should not be a permanent fix. “It must be lifted as soon as more sustainable sources of income are found,” he said.
