South Africa’s rural population ‘left behind’ as provinces underperform – The Mail & Guardian
South Africa’s economic problems have deepened regional disparities, with rural provinces significantly underperforming, compared with urban hubs Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Don’t Look Away: Uncle sentenced for raping 12-year-old niece
A rapist uncle from Mpumalanga has been sentenced in the Ermelo Regional Court to life imprisonment for raping his niece.

The victim was only 12-years-old.

The name of the uncle cannot be disclosed to protect the identity of the victim and prevent secondary trauma.

The uncle pleaded guilty and was subsequently convicted for the rape.

GDP contracts by 0.3% in the third quarter
South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by 0.3% in the third quarter, following an increase of 0.3% in the second quarter.

The agriculture, forestry and fishing industry decreased by 28.8%, contributing -0.7 of a percentage point to the negative GDP growth. This was primarily due to decreased economic activities reported for field crops.

Second suspect arrested in Free State liquor licence corruption case
A second suspect has been linked to the liquor licence corruption case and has appeared in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court in the Free State.

The 53-year-old man, identified as an official of the Liquor Board in Bethlehem, was arrested by members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s (known as Hawks) Serious Corruption Investigation team.
