For 8 years all schools in the subdivision remained closed because of attacks from armed separatists.
overnment primary and Secondary schools in Konye subdivision, of Meme Division, have finally opened their doors for ef- fective learning, after 8 years of shutdown. Most of the villages along the Kumba-Mamfe highway of the subdivision can now attend schools freely.
It should be noted that Konye subdivision was the only subdivision in the South west region where schools were completely grounded for the past 8 years. Despite calls from all quarters, the population due to fear of armed separatists decided to send their kids to Kumba for school.
The general cry of the elite was for the creation of a military base in Konye to help protect the population.During a visit to some of the schools by the Meme Senior Divisional Officer, Ntou’ou Ndong Chamberlin last Thursday October 10, 2024; the administrator noted with satisfaction the turnout in the different schools. The SDO used the occasion to laud the efforts of the Divisional officer of Konye, the Mayor, the forces of law and order and other stakeholders, for their firm commitment and responsibility to see that children go to school.
He urged them not to relent their efforts for their good work will be rewarded over time. He prayed that God guide them in their leadership role in safeguarding the future of the youths in Konye-Sub-division. So far, teachers who were redeployed to the city due to the shutdown of schools, will be sent back to Konye. It was also disclosed that a military base has been created in Konye to protect the lives of people and their properties. The inspector of Basic Education noted that the primary schools have been grouped into centers for security reasons and that they will operate as such for this academic year. The inspector pleaded with teachers transferred to the different schools to report on duty in order to avoid administrative sanctions.
He noted that henceforth teachers who fail to teach in the institutions for which they have been employed, risk having their salaries suspended. Adding that teachers are propellers of virtue in the society, as such must be exemplary in going about their job.
The SDO promised to closed down all clandestine schools that have been operating under the banner of Community schools in Konye. The resumption of schools in Konye subdivision has signal hope to the end of the socio-political crisis in the area. With the effective resumption of schools, other activities will kick off.
