Young Warriors tour Kariba
Saturday, 21 July 2012 21:08 Roy MatikiThe Young Warriors have cancelled their proposed friendly international against their Zambian counterparts owing to a hectic training schedule.

They wanted to use the game to prepare for their African Youth Championships second round tie against Angola at Barbourfields on Saturday.Team manager Patrick Mutesva said they had dropped the plans after reducing the training camp to two weeks from the envisaged four. The Young Warriors will now visit the resort town of Kariba to play ZPC Kariba, a Northern Region Division One side, this afternoon.

Mutesva called upon residents of Kariba to come in numbers and watch the Young Warriors in action before they play Angola.Mutesva believes the math against ZPC Kariba is an advantage to the Young Warriors because Kariba is hot and the weather conditions in Angola are similar hence they would be acclamatising in preparation for the second leg. Head coach Jairos Tapera also declared that his players have got the character and stamina to produce the result on Saturday.

The coach beefed up his squad by calling up Philip Tembani of Buffaloes, Walter Musona from AYSA, Mclive Phiri of Quelaton and Raphael Madzongwe of FC Platinum.Captain Willard Kalongonda has been leading by example at training with the support of Elvis Moyo, Kudakwashe Mahachi and Kelvin Moyo.Nqobizitha Masuku of Bantu Rovers, Munyaradzi Chidzonga, Edmore Tsoro of FC Platinum and Farai Madora have been in sparkling form and if they continue Angola would be in for a rude awakening.

“When we play Angola in the first leg, we shall miss the services of inspirational defender Vincent Mbira, who accumulated two yellow cards against Botswana both in the first and second legs. He will be available for the return match in Luanda,” said Tapera. Together with his assistant George Madira, the coaches are hoping to get a partner for Highlanders’ Knox Mutizwa, to relieve pressure from the gunman who destroyed Botswana in the 4-0 first leg victory at Barbourfields Stadium.

Gunners striker Madora, who is also a member of the national Futsal squad, scored the solitary goal in the return leg that ended 1-all in Gaborone.Tapera said that they would want to work on the right midfield and the defence. “Our strength lies more in the middle of the park, where we control the midfield, being creative and mobile, supplying clean balls to the strikers. The midfielders must recover quickly if they lose possession,” said Tapera.

The FC Platinum junior mentor admitted that they had little information over their opponents. But he said four players in their youth squad were also members of the senior national team, who are due to meet Zimbwe in the final South Africa 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier.SquadT.
