:A couple have turned their New York City apartment into the ultimate child’s paradise – but they don’t have any kids.

The young-at-heart owners have done away with stairs in their 40-foot high penthouse and installed a four-story mirror polished stainless steel slide so they can twist and turn their way around the stunning home.

Atop a 1896 skyscraper in Manhattan’s Financial District, the unique apartment was designed by architect David Hotson, and features in the Spring issue of Bloomberg Pursuits magazine.

According to Bloomberg, Hotson used a 3-D laser scan of the unfinished space to create the spectacular design that is so incongruous with the centuries-old building’s exterior.

Hotson’s clients tasked him with the brief of creating perpetual childhood and it’s not just the slide that fills it – ladders lead to hidden lofts, a swing dangles in front of a fireplace and a climbing wall makes pre-breakfast exercise a breeze.

Even the couple’s cats have their own adventure playground, with secret passageways built into the walls.

The home has 32 windows, offering panoramic vistas from all four sides of the apartment.

But the slide, which had to be constructed before any walls or floors, is by far the stand out feature.

The first leg of the mesmerizing tube passes through the 7,000-square-foot apartment’s attic, coils around a column over one of the guest bedrooms, then slips through a seamless glass window.

Natural light beams into the tunnel from dormer windows and intrepid travelers can glimpse a fleeting vista through the entire length of the penthouse as they slide, preferably on a canary yellow cashmere blanket to enhance speed.

Riders can pop out at the bedroom if they so desire or continue all the way down to the entrance level.

The lower slide twists down through the ceiling and into the library on the main level, suspended from a single point within the floor structure above, Hotson says on his website.

As the shiny slide reaches the end, the material flares out to create a distorted rectangular mirror. The reflective surface forms the wall of the library and deposits you back in the entrance gallery at the foot of the staircase, where I’m sure many a guest legs it back to the top to do it all again.
