Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani arrived in Cairo, on Monday, on an official visit to Egypt, during which it is hoped that several agreements will be concluded between the two countries. Al-Sudani was received by his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly at Cairo International Airport.

The office of Al-Sudani confirmed that Iraq and Egypt will sign memorandums of understanding in the financial and commercial fields. Al-Sudani will also meet with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and senior officials in the Egyptian government, as well as the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and Grand Imam of Al Azhar Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb. He will also hold an expanded meeting with the Iraqi community residing in Egypt.

On Tuesday, the Egyptian-Iraqi Joint Higher Committee will hold a meeting, which will include the signing of several memorandums of understanding in the financial and commercial fields, as well as in the areas of tourism, administrative development, diplomatic training, and exchange of experiences in various fields.

In recent years, Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan have formed a sort of alliance based on shared security, political, and economic interests. The leaders of the three countries have repeatedly affirmed the need for expediting the implementation of their joint projects and for removing obstacles facing them.

Jordan has expressed plans to supply Iraq with electricity in 2023 after the required infrastructure is completed. Egypt also plans to deliver electricity to Iraq via Jordan by linking their power grids. Additionally, the three countries are working on setting up an industrial city on the Iraqi-Jordanian border.

Jordan and Iraq are also working to complete preparations for implementing an oil pipeline project linking the two countries.

Egypt already has a power link with Jordan at a capacity of 550 MW, and work is underway to boost the capacity of this power line in order for it to reach Iraq.
